Artist Statement

I love to make dots!
These are not the dots of pointillism — 
     using tiny, distinct dots of pure colors, juxtaposed, which become 
     blended in the viewer's eye.

These are not the dots of the Australian Aboriginals — 
     maps of journeys and diagrams of stories, in "real" time and in
     Dreamtime, abstracted to protect the sacred meanings.
 
These are not your grandmother's polka dots — 
     perfectly round and evenly spaced, symbols of femininity,
     childishness, playfulness.
 
Drawing my inspiration from — all of the above, as well as —​

• "entoptic phenomenon" — things seen as a function of the eye itself and how it is made... closed-eye hallucinations... the phosphenes at play behind my closed eyes...

• patterns everywhere — in sub-atomic physics, microbiology, biology, botany, astro-physics...

• color — what it means, what it does...

• art and ornamentation made for decorative and protective practices, for magic, religious and healing purposes...

• the rewards of attention to detail and close observation — the grace in the commonplace...
